Thea Foundation’s Art Department series continues this week with two local artists teaming up for a collaborative exhibition exploring balance, pressure and the illusion of stability, opening on Thursday, Aug. 6.
“Holding Tension” features the work of Arkansas-based abstract painter, architect and sculptor Jeff Horton alongside Little Rock contemporary ceramic artist Yelena Petroukhina. Horton is known for bringing his architectural background to his paintings while “keeping surface and structure in unresolved conversation.” Petroukhina’s featured series examines stripped-down homes “as a container for memory” that must be “held in careful equilibrium.”
“Together, the two bodies of work suggest that geometry was never really about arriving at stability,” the foundation says. “It’s what we build so tension — between memory and material, gesture and grid, the intuitive and the engineered — has somewhere to be held rather than resolved.”
An opening reception will take place from 5-7:30 p.m. at the nonprofit’s Argenta space and will include eats and drinks from Heritage Catering.
“Holding Tension” runs through the end of the month. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Thursday or by appointment.
