S. Lee Rush
Community Engagement Manager, Methodist Family Health Foundation
HOW I KNEW THIS WAS MY PASSION
My initial interaction with Methodist Family Health Foundation was serving on the board of directors. Progress is being made in mental health awareness. Meeting our clients and experiencing our programs opened my eyes to the overwhelming need for mental healthcare.
A SKILL I NEVER EXPECTED TO USE IN THIS FIELD
A sort of matchmaking. In banking, I figured out how the bank’s services could meet someone’s individual needs. Now I use that same skill to understand a supporter’s interests and how they can best engage with our mission.
LESSON I LEARNED THE HARD WAY
Things don’t always go as expected, no matter how hard you work or how much you plan. I finally, finally learned to relax with that. Let July be July. Let August be August. You can’t fix everything.
MY FIRST JOB AND WHAT IT TAUGHT ME
I was a past-due mortgage loan collector at Worthen Bank. That experience taught me how to listen, develop a path forward and have very difficult conversations in an honest and respectful way.
ONE THING I WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT MY COMPANY
Arkansas CARES is Methodist Family Health’s only adult program dedicated to supporting pregnant women and mothers struggling with substance use and mental health. Our family-centered, 120-day approach is unique for recovery treatment in Arkansas.
HOW I UNPLUG AFTER A LONG DAY AT WORK
I have played tennis all my life and spend lots of time on the court, thanks to my dad. It’s nice to catch up with friends over a game. Plus, I enjoy reading, writing and still follow the investment markets.
BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED
Sometimes you win. Sometimes you learn. I’ve had some good wins. I’ve also learned a lot.
BEST CAREER MOMENT SO FAR
My transition to Methodist Family Health Foundation after 30-plus years in banking, trusts and investments. Seeing the direct impact of my work for the children and women we serve is very rewarding.
NONPROFIT I WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT
Methodist Family Health Foundation. Our mental and behavioral healthcare system serves people of all denominations and faiths who have experienced unimaginable trauma. The foundation provides support for their journey forward.
BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN MY CAREER
Banking can be a fickle business.
