Thea Foundation is wrapping up its 2026 Art Department series with a collaborative exhibition celebrating the work of two Arkansas artists. The fourth and final installment of the year, “Smokes and Ladders,” features Jason McCann and Michael Shaeffer and opens Thursday, Nov. 5.
An opening reception will take place from 5-7:30 p.m. at Thea Foundation’s gallery in North Little Rock’s Argenta Arts District. Guests can meet the artists, explore their work and enjoy drinks and light bites while connecting with fellow art enthusiasts.
Though their artistic styles differ, McCann and Shaeffer share an interest in the stories found in everyday life. McCann explores the interplay of light, shadow and architectural structures, with a particular focus on fire escapes. Shaeffer, meanwhile, brings expressive portraits to life, capturing themes of youth, freedom and personal experience. Together, their work considers the ways we grow, explore and find meaning in the moments that shape us.
“Smokes and Ladders” will remain on view at Thea Foundation’s gallery throughout November. Those unable to attend the opening reception can visit during regular gallery hours, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
McCann teaches art at Little Rock Central High School and holds degrees from the University of Central Arkansas and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. His work has been exhibited throughout the Southeast, and he is represented locally by Boswell Mourot Fine Art.
Shaeffer studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York before returning to Arkansas in 2010. In addition to his work as an artist, he serves on Thea Foundation’s Board of Directors and is represented by M2 Gallery in Little Rock.
