Nick Tonino
Project Manager, Nabholz
MY FIRST JOB AND WHAT IT TAUGHT ME
My first job was an aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Air Force. It instilled discipline and pride, while the aircraft maintenance career demands technical competency with adherence to processes, or possible disastrous outcomes. Many depended on your integrity.
BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN MY CAREER
Transitioning from a military to civilian career. This required a different set of leadership skills relying on influence, not authority, and learning the technical side of construction since it isn’t my core industry.
BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED
It was a sticky note passed to me during a meeting stating, “Never miss an opportunity to shut up.” This advice was critical as a leader by not being the first to speak, allowing others to share opinions and thoughts first.
ONE THING I WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT MY COMPANY
Nabholz is a diverse construction company with many outstanding people. It was easy for me to move between my military career full of camaraderie to Nabholz because they take great care of their people by developing them professionally and personally.
BEST CAREER MOMENT SO FAR
In my previous military career, it was a rescue operation in 2003 that exposed me to the strategic outcomes of operations. In my second career as a construction project manager, it was seeing my first project come to life.
