Memphis knows music like nowhere else. That’s why the Tennessee city is the setting for the upcoming Arkansas Repertory Theatre musical aptly titled “Memphis.”
Its music and lyrics by David Bryan and lyrics and book by Joe DiPietro, “Memphis” is based loosely on the life of Dewey Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play African American music in the 1950’s. With that decade as a backdrop, “Memphis” chronicles the relationship of R&B-lover Phillips and a local rising star through the whirlwind of the music industry in the Civil Rights Era.
After a three-year stent on Broadway, “Memphis” boasts eight Tony Award nominations, winning Best Orchestrations, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical and Best Musical in 2010.
Opening night for ‘Memphis” will be Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. For full information on pricing, scheduling and the musical, click here. For tickets, click here.
