The Top 6 Things to Do in Little Rock This Weekend

Do you consider 20-year-old movies, mounds of pizza and sweat-swirled color dust to be art? If so, looks like you’ve got a pretty sweet weekend ahead.

Friday, August 14

Second Friday Art Night at the Historic Arkansas Museum, Little Rock: Two exhibits this month? We’ll take it! Both the drawing and ceramic stylings of Katherine Rutter & Ginny Sims, as well asPop Up in the Rock: The Exhibit.” Get down to the sweet jams of John Willis and the Late Romantics, as well as August’s Year of Arkansas Beer offering from Moody Brews. The event starts at 5 p.m. For more information, click here.

Round Robin at Gallery 221, Little Rock: Remember in school when you would play the game where you’d write the first sentence of a story, pass it around for your friends to do the same, then you’d write the ending of whatever they created? That’s exactly what a group of local artists are doing at Gallery 221, but in front of an audience. Fun starts at 5 p.m. For more info, click here.

“Beetlejuice” at Ron Robinson Theater, Little Rock: Before there was Voldemort, there was another feind whose name was unspeakable. Say it three times and you’ll wind up with some regrets. This 1988 cult classic is part cheesy comedy, part spooky story (very little part) and pure gold. Plus, it comes right on the heels of the big confirmation that a “Beetlejuice 2” is in the works. Yes, really. And yes, we’re counting. That makes three. Help. The show starts at 10 p.m. For more info, click here.

Saturday, August 15

Color Vibe 5K at the Barton Coliseum, Little Rock: We think you pretty much know how this is going to go. You lace up your cross-trainers, grab a pair of sunglasses and prepare yourself for big smiles, a little sweat, lots of color and a dance party at the finish line. Pro tip: Maybe you don’t wear your nicest, most expensive running gear for this one. Start time is 9 a.m. For more info, click here.

Yoga Warriors Day at Mellow Mushroom, Little Rock: Some are fully at peace when they say “ohm,” for others, it’s saying “pizza.” On Saturday, the two camps can share the same space. The west Little Rock pizza joint Mellow Mushroom will be donating a portion of its proceeds to Yoga Warriors Fighting Colon Cancer, a nonprofit organization founded by the FOX16 News anchor, Donna Terrell. She started the group after her daughter, Queah, who found strength in yoga while battling colon cancer, passed away in 2011. The night will also feature a raffle to give away free pizza every week for a year. Namaste. For more info, click here.

“Good Will Hunting” and “Dr. Strangelove” Double Feature at Ron Robinson Theater, Little Rock:Yep, the Ron Robinson is packing in a two-punch party Saturday night. Get your laughs with “Dr. Strangelove,” the 1964 comedy centered around a nuclear holocaust. It’s funnier than it sounds, and hey, it was the 60s. When it’s all said and done, go hit the concession stand and then head right back in for the 1997 drama that racked up nine Academy Award nominations, “Good Will Hunting.” Fair warning, though: If this is the first Robin Williams movie you’ve seen since last August, you might want to bring a few extra tissues. “Dr. Strangelove” begins at 7 p.m., with “Good Will Hunting” following at 10.
