The Arkansas Arts Center is getting a makeover, and no, we’re not just talking about its restaurant. The AAC recently announced the five architecture firm finalists that are in the running to spearhead the renovations.
“The project involves a complete reimagining of the Arkansas Arts Center, including renovation of the current facility as well adding much needed additional space,” executive director Todd Herman said. “Over its 50+ years, the AAC has been a well-loved facility. It’s time for a refurbishment that will enhance the experience of our visitors, students and staff.”
The five firms chosen hail from all over the world, bringing a wide variety of talent and beautiful portfolios with them. The firms chosen are Allied Works, Shigeru Ban, Studio Gang, Thomas Phifer and Snohetta.
When it came to choosing the five finalists, an expert panel and selection committee agreed that the finalists pool are architects with the specific skill sets needed to renovate museums and cultural institutions on both a national and international stage. But this project won’t rely solely on outside skill. Once a design architect is selected, the process for selecting a local architect to collaborate on the project will begin.
The five finalists will be presenting their firm’s project approach and design philosophies to the selection committee on Nov. 1. The presentations will take place in the AAC lower lobby lecture hall from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and are open for public viewing.
“Cultural centers and museums have evolved over the decades in how they serve the public,” Herman said. “They have become gathering places, educational spaces, economic catalysts, community symbols, as well as repositories for some of the world’s greatest art. The scope of our project will address these new roles as well as our immediate needs. Our goal is to create a space that energizes the community and MacArthur Park and adds significantly to the quality of life for every person in Central Arkansas.”
The news of the renovation follows the announcement of the Center’s restaurant name and menu change. Formerly Best Impressions, Canvas restaurant will continue to serve lunch and select dinner service during Art After Hours.
The renovated space features delicious new menu items ranging from shrimp and grits with Kent Walker cheddar to a Boursin cheeseburger with GrassRoots CoOp ground beef, as well as updated decor.
