The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts is taking us back to the days of yore with a summer full of theater, poetry and performance. Join in the fun during its Shakespeare Summer program and see how the world’s most iconic playwright shaped the plays, films and books we love today.
Kick off Shakespeare Summer on July 10 with a screening of “10 Things I Hate About You,” the 1999 romantic comedy based on The Bard’s classic “The Taming of the Shrew.” Following the film, screenwriter Kirsten Smith will host a live Q&A about adapting centuries-old stories for modern audiences.
Then, on July 11, the AMFA Performing Arts Theater will present a filmed stage production of “The Taming of the Shrew” from London’s Globe Theatre that is sure to inspire plenty of laughs.
In AMFA’s Glass Box, renowned author and Shakespeare scholar Dr. Paige Martin Reynolds will join moderator Dr. Pilar McKay for a discussion on how classic characters navigate performance and identity. The conversation takes place July 15 from 6-7:30 p.m., with local actors and members of SHAKE Theatre of New York performing select scenes to illuminate the discussion.
Looking for audience interaction, live music and comedy? From July 16-19, Shakespeare’s fast-paced, 90-minute play “The Comedy of Errors” will deliver all three in an immersive production inside the Glass Box. Tickets also include a pre-show performance by The Revelers.
Also on July 18, AMFA will host a Shakespeare and puppetry workshop with Josh Rice. Attendees will design and build their own puppets while exploring movement, voice and character to bring Shakespeare’s world to life.
