Men on a Mission 2023: Michael Fothergill

BEST CAREER MOMENT SO FAR
Erasing the deficit and doubling Ballet Arkansas’ gross operating budget and audience base in under five years, with support from an excellent staff and board of directors.

MY FIRST JOB AND WHAT IT TAUGHT ME
My first job as a busser at a local Des Moines, Iowa buffet exposed me to teamwork, responsibility and customer service. At a young age I learned the importance of hard work, diligence and collaboration.

WHAT KEEPS ME COMING BACK TO MY JOB EVERY DAY
Ballet Arkansas has a legacy spanning four decades, and through the years it has meant much to many. I believe in its mission and its people, and I see the positive effects of its programming within the community.

A SKILL I NEVER EXPECTED TO USE IN THIS FIELD
A skill I never anticipated needing in this field was crisis communication, particularly during the pandemic. Effectively managing and communicating changes and challenges became vital to ensure the safety and well-being of our performers and community.

ONE THING I WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT MY COMPANY
It’s now ranked among the Top 100 Ballet Companies in America and its world-class artists and programming uplifts, enriches and inspires more than 50,000 Arkansans each year.
