BEST CAREER MOMENT SO FAR
One of the highlights of my career was leading a clinical team at the Pentagon following the 9/11 attacks. Many other crisis response experiences following school shootings, suicides and natural disasters clearly changed my vision of the world.
MY FIRST JOB AND WHAT IT TAUGHT ME
After graduate school, I began my career at a small mental health clinic in my hometown of Star City, Arkansas. With the support of family, friends and mentors, I was able to find my passion of helping people help themselves.
WHAT KEEPS ME COMING BACK TO MY JOB EVERY DAY
Having the opportunity to help the underserved and misunderstood on their individual roads to recovery never gets old. Making a difference in the Arkansas mental health system as a whole keeps me motivated to come to work every day.
BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN MY CAREER
Although significant progress has been made in my 40-year career, affecting real change along the way in a mental health system that has historically placed very little value on those suffering from mental illness has been very challenging.
BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED:
Don’t listen to people who tell you what to do. Listen to people who encourage you to do what you know is right in your heart. Luck is where preparation meets opportunity
