Being allowed to serve as the President of Gill Ragon Owen, P.A. It is a humbling honor and responsibility, and other than being a husband and dad, it is the most rewarding role and experience I’ve ever had.
HOW I KNEW THIS WAS MY PASSION
The first case I tried was in small claims over less than $1,000. I was a nervous disaster, but the excitement of preparation and competitive energy that I experienced was unforgettable and told me I was in the right field.
MY FIRST JOB AND WHAT IT TAUGHT ME
Delivering papers in the sixth grade. Having 50 customers rely on you to do your job seven days a week, 365 days a year taught me that there is very little more important in business and life than being reliable.
NONPROFIT I WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT
Methodist Family Health is unsung in that it has been serving the children of our state for over a century. Touring their therapeutic group home here and seeing the support they provide kids with emotional needs was a moving experience.
WHAT KEEPS ME COMING BACK TO MY JOB EVERY DAY
I love the process of analyzing, developing and strategizing a case, but the individuals I have the privilege to work with and the clients I get to serve are what have made my career a true pleasure.
BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN MY CAREER
The litigation process is often lengthy and always tough on all clients, but especially individuals. We are trained to be objective professionals, but it is difficult to see someone struggle with an emotionally trying and unfamiliar process.
A SKILL I NEVER EXPECTED TO USE IN THIS FIELD
Being empathetic and compassionate for a client is far more important than I would have ever have expected as a law student. I’m lucky to have parents that raised me to be mindful of what others are going through.
ONE PRACTICE I USE TO MAINTAIN MY MENTAL HEALTH
My wife is definitely my rock on all matters, but getting exercise on a regular basis is essential to keeping my mental health sound. The results may not show externally, but internally it is a big help!
BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED
I once heard a random speaker nicely sum up the many lessons of my parents, teachers and mentors throughout my life: “There is nothing more valuable than a kind word, a thoughtful gesture and a passion for what you do!”
