Jeff Nichols, Mary Steenburgen and More Join Forces on New Arkansas Cinema Society

Pass the popcorn. This is going to be good.

The Arkansas film community is getting a welcomed boost in the form of a new organization called the Arkansas Cinema Society.

According to our sister publication, Arkansas Business, the group is designed to build a collaborative environment for movie buffs to network, share concepts and of course, watch movies.

So who’s running the show? The board includes Arkansas native Mary Steenburgen, former Gov. Mike Beebe and current Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s Chief of Staff, Alison Williams. Chairing the group is Little Rock native Jeff Nichols, the film writer and director behind Oscar-nominated “Loving” and 2012 thriller “Mud.”

“One of my biggest hurdles as a kid in Arkansas was I just didn’t have any connection points with the global film industry,” Nichols told IndieWire, also noting the Austin Film Society as inspiration for his new hometown endeavor.

The Arkansas Cinema Society hopes to change that, making film and cinema more accessible to its biggest local enthusiasts.
