Accents: Highlights of the October Issue

An emphasis on some of the best moments of the new issue, stunning settings, event season and more.

Photographing our October cover story took us to one of downtown’s hidden treasures: the historic halls of the Albert Pike Residence Hotel.

Built in 1929, the hotel-turned-apartment-facility is steeped in Spanish Revival architecture, topped with a clay tile roof and filled with intricate ironwork, ornate tiling and stunning stained glass, each detail adding to its truly unique character.

“A Candlelight Gala feature is such a great opportunity to play with how we treat lighting,” art director Emma Devine says. “For this shoot, we were really inspired by vintage film noir-style portraits. They are mysterious and moody, which plays perfectly into the seasonal atmosphere of the October issue. Chance was a great sport and really leaned into striking his best old Hollywood star poses. Plus, his hairstyle was right on the money when he walked in the door.”

The Arkansas Giving Guide is one of the most important sections we publish each year, and it’s not a responsibility we take lightly. If this is your first time seeing it, or you just need a refresher, we made you a rundown of what’s inside and how to use it.

“There are so many pressures with nonprofits, so one thing I don’t have time for is reinventing the wheel.”

Ah, event season. There’s nothing like fall in Little Rock, and a calendar packed with fundraisers and festivals is a big reason why. See for yourself in this month’s jam-packed Datebook (which is just scratching the surface, by the way), and say hi if you see us out taking Party Pics!
