Why did you choose to get into financial advising?

We consider the skill sets of working with people and working with numbers to be our strengths. We like working with people and listening and getting to know them on a personal level in order to understand their needs and goals. We also like “crunching the numbers” in order to put together a solid investment plan to achieve those goals and help our clients realize the most from their investments.

What sets yours apart from other firms?

SBCM was started in Little Rock over 25 years ago (although under the name Southwest Capital Management). And our combined investment experience is over 65 years. With the knowledge gained through many years of experience, we feel confident in our ability to build solid investment portfolios that will stand the test of time and help our clients achieve their financial goals. Consequently, we have enjoyed a loyal client base.

What do you like best about your job?

Every day presents challenges and the necessity of managing the unexpected. It makes for an exciting job to start one’s day and end it under those circumstances. It is not a profession for most people, but it suits our temperament just fine. We enjoy building relationships with our clients and being a steady hand when volatile financial markets present a need to maintain patience rather than succumb to panic.

Do you have a niche clientele?

We don’t limit our potential clientele to a term that is common for many in our business – “high net worth clients.” We work with “high net worth” and “not-so-high net worth” clients. Our client base is made up primarily of families, foundations and retirement plans. Our investment strategies fit well with these investors by attempting to minimize losses during market weakness while maximizing returns during favorable market conditions.

What makes your customer service outstanding?

We are a small firm with a small number of clients. Thus, we provide close personal service to our clients. We pride ourselves on being accessible to our clients when they need us. We take the time to tailor our recommendations specifically to each individual client, making sure to be straightforward and deliberate with our advice. You won’t get lost in the crowd if you are a client at SBCM.

What’s your investment philosophy?

People handle a bull market very well from a psychological perspective when their portfolio values are rising. However, many people get anxious and worried during a bear market seeing their investments diminish in value. Because we have weathered so many bear markets over the last 50+ years, we have developed strategies which focus on capital preservation during bear markets while taking advantage of the good returns earned in bull markets.

How many hours do you work a week? 40+

Two hobbies outside of work:
Tom: Trout fish and travel
Johnny: Hunting and fishing; staying busy raising two children with wife, Claire.
