5 Things to Do With Your Kids Over Winter Break

Staying in pajamas all day can be fun, but you can only watch “A Christmas Story” so many times before you short-circuit.

If you need ideas on how to keep the kids entertained and off the couch this winter break, consider these fun activities the whole family can do around the metro.

Burn some energy.

It’s coming: the moment when you and the kiddos need to get out of the house ASAP. Put their cooped-up energy to good use — and maybe earn yourself a silent night in the process — by hitting the family-friendly bike skills area at Two Rivers Park, box sledding at the Clinton Center, taking a swing at Topgolf (opening Dec. 22) or at one of the disc golf courses around the city (including the new indoor course Perks Putts inside Perks and Recreation downtown)

Get educational (without getting bored).

No, we’re not suggesting you hand them worksheets to keep them sharp over break. (Anyone else have PTSD from Mad Minute?) Instead, pack up the crew and head out for a self-led tour of murals in Little Rock, a public art scavenger hunt in North Little Rock, an afternoon in the Museum of Discovery’s new galleries or the Witt Stephens Jr. Central Arkansas Nature Center.

Take on a new project.

Somehow idle hands are more dangerous when they’re little. If you’re looking to get creative, sign up for some family-friendly classes at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, build your own jewelry at Argenta Bead Company or channel your imagination (and competitive spirit) at the new Caverns & Forests Board Game Cafe.

Check in and check out.

Newsflash: Books aren’t the only things you’ll find in your local library. STEM exploration crafts, toys, telescopes, musical instruments, birdwatching gear and more await across the Central Arkansas Library System, which has 13 branches in addition to the Main Library downtown currently under construction.

Squeeze in a bit more seasonal magic.

If you’re not ready to say goodbye to the holidays even once they’ve passed, you can still see the trees and decor at The Capital Hotel or the Arkansas State Capitol building through the first of the year, and the Trail of Lights at Sherwood’s Enchanted Forest through Dec. 30. If you’re ready to move on, but still want the magic, check out the GloWILD! lantern exhibit at the Little Rock Zoo through Jan. 7.
