The Women’s Foundation of Arkansas (WFA) will be hosting a Know Your Ballot Webinar on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at noon in celebration of the 100-year anniversary of American women earning the right to vote.
As voter turnout in the U.S. trails behind other country, the WFA hopes the event will encourage all Arkansans to get to the polls (or vote by mail) this fall. The event also serves as a reminder that while many women in America earned the right to vote during the women’s suffrage movement, not all American women were granted that right 100 years ago. It urges us to acknowledge how far we’ve come, and how far we have left to go.
“2020 is historic for many reasons, and the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas would not be fulfilling its mission if we did not take the opportunity to highlight the centennial anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote,” says Anna Beth Gorman, WFA executive director. “During this pandemic, it is critically important to ensure that our democracy is accessible to all. We are grateful to the group of panelists that have volunteered their time to educate women across our state on the important role they play in our political process and how they can navigate getting out to vote in these uncertain times.”
Here’s a peek at what you can expect from panelists:
- Anna Beth Gorman, executive director of the WFA, on the significance of the centennial of women’s suffrage in America
- Terri Hollingsworth, Pulaski County circuit and county clerk, on voter registration and absentee ballots
- Kristin Higgins, program associate in the Public Policy Center at the UA System Division of Agriculture, on the Arkansas ballot issues
- Brad Cameron, Arkansas Counts communications chair and Big Big Box founder, on the census
- Sarah Jo Reynolds, Republican Party of Arkansas executive director, on women in politics and the importance of voting
