WOMEN TO WATCH

Theresa Timmons-Shamberger

Executive Director
Timmons Arts Foundation

I am the founder and executive director of the Timmons Arts Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit devoted to supporting the arts. The Timmons Arts Foundation is based on family. Art was a part of our everyday lives, and having the opportunity to attend art classes in school proved invaluable. The Timmons Arts Foundation provides grants, has purchased instruments for at-risk students, and most recently established Cultivating the Arts Youth Summer Camp, a free four-week summer program geared toward at-risk youth ages 7-12 and focusing on five components of art.

PRESSING QUESTIONS

How did you know this is what you wanted to do?

Growing up in the arts, I experienced the benefits firsthand. Once I realized that all children were not afforded the same opportunity, I knew what I wanted to do. Creative arts are the building blocks of child development.

Best moment of your career so far?

Timmons Arts Foundation provided at-risk youth the opportunity to receive instruction in vocal music, visual art, dance, fashion and instrumental music at our inaugural Cultivating the Arts Youth Summer Camp. Seeing their growth over a four-week period was priceless!

Best advice you've ever received?

Do not let the fear of failure stop you from working toward your life mission. In the words of Neale Donald Walsch, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

Favorite part of living in Little Rock?

Being a transplant from Cleveland, Ohio, I love the natural beauty of Arkansas. You do not have to travel far to enjoy nature. There are so many beautiful places in Little Rock.

I wish I knew how to ________.

SING. I’m like Tom Cruise in “Risky Business,” using my hair brush as my mic. I put on concerts in my house every day.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The children. Seeing them experience things for the first time. Watching their eyes light up as they play their first song on the piano, or learn how to leap in dance. There is nothing more rewarding than empowering our children.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

There are so many things I would tell my 18-year-old self. I would start out by saying to stay focused on achieving one goal at a time. You are not a good multi-tasker.

How do you define success?

Success is being able to do what I love. I enjoy all facets of the arts and working with children. Having the opportunity to contribute to the enrichment, education and empowerment of children through the arts is my success.
