WOMEN TO WATCH

Stefanie Vestal

Director of Strategy and External Affairs
Little Rock School District

I grew up in New England and was a teacher in Washington, D.C. In 2022, my wife and I moved to Little Rock so I could attend the Clinton School of Public Service. In my role with LRSD, I support schools, plan events and manage special projects. Every day I work to improve public education and support students, families and communities.

PRESSING QUESTIONS

The one thing I wish people knew about my field

Public education is a complex beast. It’s demanding, challenging, worthwhile, fulfilling work. And it’s work that needs the community to rally to support and provide opportunity for all students.

Best career moment so far

Being project manager for Reading in the Rock. I’m working with amazing people and organizations to develop a culture of reading and increase access to books for students in LRSD.

The first thing I do to course-correct when I hit a wall

I think about my end goal, if everyone who should be at the table is there. I consider what perspectives and voices may be missing and try to seek them out.

Best advice I ever received

My maternal grandmother told me I could do anything I put my mind to. My high school field hockey coach told me you can’t win if you’re always playing defense.

A skill I never expected to need in this field

The amount of times I reach into my Girl Scouts/camp counselor days to have an ice breaker or team-building activity never fails to surprise me.

Nonprofit I wish more people knew about

City Year, a national education nonprofit that employs 17-25 year olds as AmeriCorps members supporting schools and communities across the country.

Biggest challenges in my career

Being a middle school history teacher during COVID-19. Teaching during COVID was a different level of hard. Balancing instructional demands with providing unprecedented support to students and families was challenging.

What I learned from my first job

My first job not babysitting or as a camp counselor was at McDonald’s. I learned a level of patience for dealing with people that I will never forget and always be grateful for.

What keeps me coming back to my job every day

The people I work with — coworkers on my team, in other departments and schools, students, family and community members I have the privilege of serving with on a daily basis.

How I knew this was my passion

As a child I wanted to be a teacher, or President, or a professional basketball player. After college I served as a City Year AmeriCorps member. That's when it clicked.

One practice I use to maintain my mental health

I like to get outside for a bike ride, a run, playing a sport, hikes or just a walk with the dog. It’s relaxing and rejuvenating for me.
