WOMEN TO WATCH

Solita Johnson

Director of Outreach and Development
American Indian Center of Arkansas

I’m incredibly grateful to be able to pursue my passions in both serving the Native community at the American Indian Center of Arkansas and owning Vintage Socialite, a sustainable vintage boutique. Engaging in meaningful community outreach through AICA and promoting sustainability through creativity with the store brings me a great sense of purpose in both of my roles.

PRESSING QUESTIONS

How I knew this was my passion

Connecting my community with services and support needed through AICA and advocating ethical fashion through the store feels like a natural extension of who I am and what I value.

What keeps me coming back to my job every day

Our dedicated team and executive director are amazing, and their tireless efforts ensure our success. I feel fortunate to be a part of such impactful work that I truly love.

Nonprofit I wish more people knew about

The American Indian Center of Arkansas of course! AICA provides a wealth of offerings, including job training and placement, mental health services, cultural training and education programs.

Best career moment so far

Co-creating a dress to honor Missing Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), that was displayed at the Arkansas State Capitol for National Day of Awareness. The exhibit now travels to raise awareness.

Biggest challenges in my career

Working with a nonprofit can be challenging as donations and grants can fluctuate. This requires adaptability and flexibility to effectively plan and execute programs while making the biggest impact.

What I learned from my first job

Working at a marina taught me that work can actually be a lot of fun. I also learned a truck can sink in just minutes on a boat ramp!

A skill I never expected to need in this field

Being a Jill-of-all-trades! I can go from creating a marketing campaign to light construction all in the same day.

One practice I use to maintain my mental health

I prioritize spending quality time with my loved ones, especially my daughter and close friends. These connections remind me of the support and love that surrounds me.
