WER Architects is a commercial architecture and interior design firm. I started at WER as an intern and have worked my way up to director of interiors. After my internship, the economy was slow and WER wasn’t sure it would be able to keep me on as a full-time designer. I loved working at WER and knew I wanted to stay, so I did a brief stint as the receptionist before being offered a full-time designer position. Patience paid off!
PRESSING QUESTIONS
How I knew this was my passion:
When I was 14, our family came home from vacation to find our house flooded from a broken hose on the refrigerator. My mom let me help pick out tile, flooring, paint color, everything. I’ve been hooked ever since.
What makes Little Rock feel like home:
My husband and I have a game we play when we go out: the first person to see someone they know wins. I love being able to walk around town and run into longtime friends.
Best advice I've ever received:
You don’t want to be the smartest person in the room. If you are, it’s time to find a new room.
If I could lunch with any woman, it would be:
Emily Ley. She started a business on the principles of slowing down and staying organized. I am a very driven person and the reminder that it's okay to have blank spaces in your calendar is so refreshing.
The one thing I wish people knew about my field:
Design impacts lives in such important ways. My goal is to create a space for my clients that they love when they walk in, but can’t quite pinpoint why, all while saving them money.
Best career moment so far:
I took a short break from commercial design to pursue residential design. I realized residential design was not my passion, but I learned so much about client satisfaction, going above and beyond and how important details are in design.
Biggest challenges in my career:
Going from interior designer to director has really pushed me in the best way to find who I am as a leader.
A nonprofit I wish more people knew about:
The Mayfly Project. It is a wonderful organization that builds relationships with children in foster care through fly fishing and introducing them to the outdoors. I have a passion for nature and children and really connect with that mission.
