WOMEN TO WATCH

Jennifer Samuel-Haeg

Commercial Insurance Producer
The Hatcher Agency

I have been in sales at The Hatcher Agency, a full-service insurance agency devoted to providing outrageous service, for almost a decade. THA has been the state’s top producing employee benefits agency in Arkansas for 30 consecutive years. We now have offices in Memphis, Dallas, Pine Bluff, Hot Springs, Jonesboro and northwest Arkansas, where I am district lead. Prior to joining THA, I was a tax accountant and in small business management at EGP, PLLC.

PRESSING QUESTIONS

How I knew this was my passion

I started working at THA in accounting. I didn’t realize this was my passion until Greg Hatcher pushed me across the finish line. Now I am forever grateful. I love what I do! I love helping people.

Biggest challenges in my career

Work-life balance during COVID-19. It was a balancing act with my three boys completing school virtually. Children don’t adhere well to home office hours when they need mom!

My first job and what it taught me

Ron Heard, CPA in Jonesboro. I was 15 and called him every week until he finally gave me a job! I worked for him until I graduated from Arkansas State University. I learned deadlines are important and to finish work without errors.

Nonprofit I wish more people knew about

Compassion House. As board president, I get to see firsthand how it provides pregnant teens a safe place to live and empowers each resident with life skills. The dream is to break the cycle of poverty, abuse and neglect.

What keeps me coming back to my job every day

The business owners across Arkansas. Being able to help navigate insurance dynamics with a business owner is exciting to me. I want to make it easy for them so they can get back to doing what they do best!

Best career moment so far

Switching professions from accounting to insurance. In insurance, I get to use my combined background from my time at Merryll Lynch, Estate planning from Arvest Asset Management and tax/business planning from EGP, LLC. and Miller & Co. CPAs.

A skill I never expected to need in this field

Negotiations and communication. Each day we need to communicate effectively to our clients, team members and carriers, or big mistakes could occur. At THA, we are always negotiating on our client’s behalf for better rates and the best coverage!

One practice I use to maintain my mental health

Positive self-talk, stay physically active and surround myself with a good support system.

Best advice I ever received

“Honey, even if you are having a bad day, you still put on your lipstick!” from Margaret Hatchett. That is how a southern woman tells you to put on your big girls pants, stop feeling sorry and go win the ballgame.

The first thing I do to course-correct when I hit a wall

Stop, talk to God, get in nature and be mindful. Afterwards, I have a couple of advisors I can call upon who are not afraid to tell me their opinions. I value honesty and constructive criticism.
