WOMEN TO WATCH

Jennifer Cobb

Executive Director and Senior Vice President
City Year Little Rock

I’ve spent my career making our community a better place for children, from serving as editor of Little Rock Family to overseeing fundraising and marketing at Arkansas Children’s. Today, I am proud to lead City Year Little Rock, a nonprofit that recruits AmeriCorps members to pursue a life-changing year of service in our public schools.

PRESSING QUESTIONS

Nonprofit I wish more people knew about

City Year! Our 17- to 25-year-old AmeriCorps members help drive student success. It’s not just tutoring. With our support, they’re building a culture of belonging – something that’s needed now more than ever.

Biggest challenges in my career

I once bought into celebrating exhaustion as a metric of success. You burn out quickly in a culture like that. I now know how to set professional boundaries.

A skill I never expected to need in this field

I’ve had many jobs that required critical thinking for 8+ hours a day. At City Year, I also have my heart turned on all day, every day. Compassion takes center stage.

What keeps me coming back to my job every day

The students we serve. Every child should have access to supportive teachers, counselors and mentors who enable them to grow and thrive. When students rise, we all rise.

Best career moment so far

Serving on the fundraising team that raised $80 million in 36 months to open Arkansas Children’s Northwest in Springdale. The impact will be felt for generations to come. It’s humbling.

Best advice I ever received

Pick your battles. I used to lock horns on every issue, every time just to ensure my voice was heard. These days, I fully appreciate the value of good silence.

The one thing I wish people knew about my field

The difference between equity and equality in schools. Equality means every student gets the same resources. Equity recognizes the individual needs of students and allocates resources to ensure everyone's success.

How I knew this was my passion

Volunteerism and service are in my blood. Plus, I’m a proud graduate of the Little Rock School District. A career promoting service in LRSD schools? Perfect values alignment.
