Weekend To-Do List: 7 Events to Check Out

There’s tons of art, musicals, dancing and history this weekend in the metro area. With that in mind, it shouldn’t be hard to find something to do. Here are a few events to watch out for.

Thursday (Aug. 14)

The Art of Motion: Tango at Arkansas Arts Center, 501 E. 9th St., Little Rock: If you’re looking to get your hips moving — or learn how to properly move your hips — this week, come to the Arkansas Arts Center. The center will host tango dance lessons with instruction from international dance instructors. After the lessons, participants will get the chance to show off their new moves. The class is $10 for non-members and free for members. It begins at 7 p.m. A dance partner is not required to attend. For more information, click here or call 372-4000.

Friday (Aug. 15)

Argenta ArtWalk on Main Street, North Little Rock: Come see arts of all kinds at the Argenta ArtWalk. Events will be taking place up and down Main Street, including at the Argenta Branch Library, Mugs Café Gallery, Thea Foundation Gallery and Claytime Pottery. Saturday (Aug. 16)

The Milk Run 5K at Murray Park, 5900 Rebsamen Park Road, Little Rock: Runners of all kinds and ages are asked to take part in a run in support of local area breastfeeding support groups. The entry fee is $25, and free for children under 12 years old. All proceeds go toward teaching and supporting pregnant and breastfeeding moms in central Arkansas. Under Two Governments: A Seminar on the Civil War at Old State House Museum, 300 W. Markham St., Little Rock: This year’s seminar at the Old State House Museum will go over some of the events that happened in Arkansas in 1864. Gary Joiner, Tom DeBlack, Michael Dougan and Mark Christ will be speakers. The event is free and will go from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information, click here or call 324-8461.

River City Comic Expo at Clear Channel Metroplex, 10800 Colonel Glenn Road, Little Rock: The fifth annual River City Comic Expo is Saturday. The expo will welcome noted comic creators like Larry Hama, Kevin Maguire, Michael Golden, Renee Witterstaetter, James O’Barr, John Lucas, and Mitch and Elizabeth Breitwesier. There will also be many dealers in comics, toys, games and cards at the expo. The cost is $5. The expo will go from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be an award given out for Best Costume. Thursday-Saturday (Aug. 14-16)

“Gridiron Gridlock” at Arkansas Repertory Theatre, 601 Main St., Little Rock: After a four-year hiatus, “Gridiron Gridlock” is coming back to The Rep. The musical features more than 75 lawyers and law professionals in a biannual production that spoofs Arkansas people and politics. Tickets are $30-$35 and can be purchased here. Friday-Sunday (Aug. 15-17)

A Dream Retrieval Ritual at Hearne Fine Art, 1001 Wright Ave., Suite C, Little Rock: This new art at Hearne Fine Art is multimedia project from composer Ryan Gatson, sound artist Rheingold Kockenschlagger, filmmaker Reed means and producer Adam Lansky, in addition to several local filmmakers, musicians, painters, dancers and actors. The exhibition will be at Hearne Fine Art this weekend, with viewings at 7 & 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday. Viewings will continue Aug. 22-24 and Aug. 28.
