UAMS Celebrates National Health Care Decisions Day with Full Event Lineup

Talking about death isn’t a fun or easy conversation to have. But in recognition of National Health Care Decisions Day, the UAMS Division of Palliative Medicine will offer a series of events aimed at making advance care and end-of-life planning a little bit easier to discuss.

National Health Care Decisions Day exists to provide clear, concise and consistent information on health care decision-making to the public. Beyond living wills, end-of-life planning involves conversations with your loved ones and choosing someone to help carry out your wishes.

Here’s the UAMS event lineup:

An Evening with Dr. BJ Miller – “Not Whether, But How”

Wednesday, April 17 | 6:30 p.m.
Ron Robinson Theater
Get tickets

BJ Miller, M.D., is a palliative care physician in San Francisco who began his “formal relationship with death” at age 19 when he was involved in an accident that resulted in the amputation of one arm below the elbow and both legs below the knee. Miller’s TED Talk, “What Really Matters at the End of Life,” illustrates his passion for keeping the patient’s needs at the center of care and encouraging empathic end-of-life care.

The program will include a screening of the Oscar-nominated short documentary “End Game” followed by Dr. Miller’s presentation. The evening will end with the opportunity for an interactive Q&A.

Let’s Have Dinner and Talk About Death

Monday, April 15 | 6-9 p.m.
Trio’s Restaurant

UAMS hopes to end the taboo around talking about death and transform the conversation into an insightful and empowering experience. Guests will enjoy dinner at Trio’s while a facilitator at each table guides the conversation using prompts. The hope is that guests will move past fears surrounding death and think more about understanding and connecting with each other and loved ones. If you’re interested, fill out the form here

Lunch and Learn for the Community

Tuesday, April 16 | 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Thompson Library
Get tickets

During the lunch, attendees will screen the film, “Being Mortal,” which explores the field of palliative care and helps shape an answer to the difficult question of what to prioritize when your time on Earth is limited. There will be an opportunity for Q&A with members of the UAMS Palliative Care team immediately following the film. Guests are asked to bring their own brown bag lunch, but drink and dessert will be provided.
