Tribute to Ray Price at South on Main Sunday

Join The Oxford American magazine for a special benefit event honoring the music of Ray Price this Sunday at South on Main, 1304 Main St., Little Rock.

Starting at 5 p.m., the “That Nashville Sound” program will profile Ray Price’s life and music, with a rotating cast of central Arkansas musicians playing two sets led by members of The Salty Dogs. Guest performers also include Amy Garland, Bonnie Montgomery, Mark Currey, Dave Almond, Trey Johnson, Paul DeWeber, Ben Meade, Lauralee Williard, Buddy Case and John Talley.

Country singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Ray Price, is widely praised for being one of the best male voices of the genre, and is long hailed as an originator of the “Nashville Sound.” One of his best-known “Nashville Sound” recordings, “For the Good Times,” was a No. 1 hit on the country music chart. Written by Kris Kristofferson, the song also landed at No. 11 on the popular music charts.

Price passed away in December 2013 and it’s especially fitting that the Oxford American honors Price’s legacy in the wake of the their 2013 Tennessee Music issue, as he contributed so much to the state’s musical heritage. His final album, “Last of the Breed,” was a collaborative effort with fellow country greats Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, and earned Price a Grammy Award in 2008.
