Tips for Staying Healthy This Holiday Season

The holidays are a time of celebration, togetherness and happiness, and yet they always seem to bring challenges to our physical and emotional health. The many demands of the season can derail your efforts to maintain healthy habits, so it’s time to brighten the holidays by making your health a priority. Take the following steps to keep you and your loved ones healthy and ready to enjoy the season.

Take the proper precautions in order to avoid sickness.

Cold and flu season is in full force during the holidays, and the last thing you want is to be battling sickness while spending time with family and friends. Take extra precautions by washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, as this is how germs spread.

And remember, getting a flu shot is the first and most important step in protecting yourself this time of year.  Flu season can last well into spring, so it’s not too late to get vaccinated.

Find ways to manage your stress.

The holidays can be a stressful time. With all the shopping, events and last-minute projects, things can quickly become overwhelming. You may easily feel the stress of managing your work duties in addition to commitments to friends and family, coupled with the financial stress of making sure everyone gets the perfect gift. Whatever the situation, try to anticipate the source of your stress and develop a plan to manage it.

One way to start is by eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and exercising regularly. Exercise is very effective in reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and enhancing overall cognitive function. This is especially helpful when stress depletes your energy or ability to concentrate.

Getting plenty of sleep is another way to help manage stress. Adults who sleep less than the recommended 7–9 hours per night are more likely to have difficulty performing daily tasks, which only adds to stress levels.

The key is to not feel guilty about taking time to focus on your needs. You have to take care of yourself before you can take of others.

Don’t splurge at your holiday parties.

While it’s fun to indulge at holiday parties, it’s also common to pack on a few extra pounds during the holiday season. But yes, there are ways you can eat both healthy and well.

Besides limiting foods high in fat, salt and sugar, try to use a smaller plate to control portions and calories. Include fruits and veggies, and don’t forget a moderate portion of a protein-rich food to control hunger. And eat slowly. It takes at least 20 minutes for your brain to realize you’re full.

Focus on the people and conversations more than the food. Socializing away from the serving table will help manage your cravings.

Look for gift ideas that encourage a healthy lifestyle.

There is no shame in wanting to exchange your lifestyle for a healthier one. As you’re out shopping, consider picking up a few healthy lifestyle gifts for family and friends, or hint that you’d like to receive one yourself.

A new knife set would be great if you want to start eating healthier. A sharp knife is a necessity and an inspiration to start chopping more veggies.

If you enjoy a healthy snack, get a hot-air popcorn popper. This gadget lets you enjoy fresh-popped popcorn without added oil or butter. One cup of popped corn has only 31 calories and even a bit of fiber.

Try to find a new hobby by booking some fitness studio time. Buy a session at your nearest yoga, pilates or even martial arts studio.

Start your workouts right by getting a new pair of running shoes or other fitness must-have. The proper workout gear can motivate you to stay active.

Make this holiday season the best it can be by staying healthy. You just might enjoy it!
