‘The Soul of Philanthropy’ Opens Aug. 22 at Mosaic Templars Cultural Center

August is Black Philanthropy Month, and to celebrate, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center is partnering with the Arkansas Black Philanthropy Collaborative to bring a new touring exhibit to the MTCC.

“Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited” is a reimagining of the book “Giving Back” by Valaida Fullwood, which explores the Black American experience with philanthropic giving through traditions grounded in faith, mutuality, responsibility and social justice.

Photographic works from the author and Charles W. Thomas will be featured along with poetry, prose and film to showcase the long and unsung legacy of Black philanthropists. From generous patrons to ingenious contributors carving a way out of no way, the exhibit aims to celebrate and explore the rich history and tradition of Black giving while revealing the human instinct of compassion, progression, fairness, connection, restoration and love.

“August is Black Philanthropy Month, so we are excited to showcase the rich tradition of giving within Black communities,” says Derek Lewis II, chair of the ABPC and president of the Derek Lewis Foundation. “It is our hope that ‘The Soul of Philanthropy’ exhibit will provide a springboard for conversations about social responsibility, civic leadership, strategic giving and community impact in our state.”

In conjunction with the exhibit opening on Aug. 22, a special series of educational and social programming called the “Soul Series” will be held throughout its duration. Soul Series events will highlight the exhibit, build awareness around Black philanthropy in Arkansas and serve as a means of collaboration among communities.

Soul Kitchen will be the first to kick off the series on Aug. 22, immediately following the grand opening of the exhibit. The “soul-food tasting culinary experience” will feature food samples inspired by Black Southern cuisine. The event is free to attend, but donations are appreciated as proceeds from the event will support the ABPC’s Give Black Arkansas Fund.

“The Soul of Philanthropy” will be on display beginning Aug. 22 at 5:30 p.m. until Dec. 3. For more information about the exhibit and the Soul Series events, visit the ABPC website.
