Scott Street has a new kid on the block — and by that we mean The New Gallery. The contemporary art gallery specializes in showcasing work made by emerging artists and mid-career artists, ranging from locals to international artists.
The gallery is owned and operated by David and Teresa Carlisle. Both Teresa and David are MFA graduates from the University of Delaware with a combined 20-plus years of experience in the art field.
“It’s been a lifelong dream of ours to open an art gallery,” Teresa says. “We spent many weekends driving around Little Rock, looking for the perfect place to start a gallery. We couldn’t find what we were looking for in existing buildings, so we decided to build. We chose our location in the South Main Street neighborhood because of the area’s emphasis on arts and culture, local businesses, and also to be part of the growth and development of the neighborhood.”
The New Gallery stands out from its residential neighbors with modern architecture and clean lines. Large windows in the front of the building ensure plenty of natural light for the first-floor gallery. The finishing touch is the aluminum architectural element, designed by AMR Architects, that was installed above the front door.
The gallery’s grand opening is set for June 7 from 5-8 p.m. The evening will also serve as an opening reception for an exhibit by Marc Mitchell featuring new works by the Fayetteville-based artist. The exhibit will be on display through June 29.
“Finding the right place for our gallery in terms of location and affordability, plus the building design, development and construction process altogether took around four years,” Teresa says. “It’s been a long journey, but we’re really looking forward to being open and being a part of the community.”
