Sweater Weather 2.0: Dreaming in Cashmere

Cashmere is known worldwide to be one of the highest quality fabrics available. In the kaleidoscope of luxurious textiles, few are as fine and decadent. Cashmere stands out among the crowd for its non-irritating feel on the skin and temperature-regulating abilities, making it an essential wardrobe fiber for every season.

The silky soft material comes from the winter undercoats of cashmere goats, a type of goat that produces cashmere wool. Undercoat hair is spun into cashmere yarn, woven into fabric and then made into the garments we know and love such as sweaters, hats, scarves, blankets, socks and more. It is a slow, labor-intensive process that yields a small amount each year, making cashmere a rare, often more expensive fabric.

When shopping for cashmere, always keep quality, not quantity, in mind. It’s a durable, versatile material that can last decades when cared for correctly. It’s recommended to always launder cashmere pieces by hand using cold water, a gentle soap and laying the item flat to dry. Cashmere doesn’t shrink when washed, and over time the material becomes softer, more “broken-in” and, unlike other knits, will better retain its shape.

High-quality cashmere can be identified by look and feel, and the lightness and warmth of the material are often preferred over wool and other natural fibers. Its durability makes it a worthy investment and a great garment to pass down through generations. Nothing compares to being swaddled in a sweater made from 100% cashmere, and the soothing softness is the extra dose of comfort that elevates the everyday.
