Start the new year off on the right foot by learning something new. University of Arkansas – Pulaski Technical College makes that simple by offering a wide variety of classes for those looking to develop a new hobby or just expand their horizons.
In addition to professional development classes, personal enrichment classes (like beekeeping and project management) and manufacturing classes, Pulaski Tech offers a huge selection of one-day culinary classes.
We’ve highlighted their selection of spring 2018 classes ranging from “Weight Loss 101” to a “French Croissant Workshop,” catering to any and all palates.
The Art of Chocolate Truffles
Jan. 11, 5:30 p.m. | South Campus | $65
Chef Jeremiah Mesker will teach the basics of cream ganache to create truffles using the shell molding technique and the traditional tabling method. Plus, every participant will take home one-two dozen chocolate truffles.
Sugar Cookie Decorating Class
Jan. 18 and March 1, 5:30 p.m. | South Campus | $65 per class
Chef Lea will take bakers through a step-by-step process on how to make and decorate the perfect sugar cookie. Participants will bake, decorate and take home a dozen cookies and copies of the recipes.
Wine Tasting 101
Jan. 23, 6 p.m. | South Campus | $65
Lorri Hambuchen, wine educator and owner of The Wine Center, will help wine newbies explore the basic profile of some of the world’s finest grapes and learn why some grapes make better wine than others. Participants will also be briefed on the common tasting techniques to impress their friends at all future dinner parties.
Weight Loss 101
Jan. 29, 5:30 p.m. | South Campus | $65
Achieve your New Year’s fitness goals by learning how to improve your dietary choices. Registered dietician Mandi Smith and chef Karen Johnson will teach participants how to manage calorie control, meal timing, fluid intake and sleep to help them on their fitness journey.
French Wines
Feb. 6, 6 p.m. | South Campus | $65
Become that friend that knows all things French wine in this class led by wine educator Lorri Hambuchen. Participants will learn the important classifications of French wine and about the best bang-for-your-buck bargains — all while tasting delicious options.
Going Global: Tasting Korean (Opening the XXIII Winter Olympic Games)
Feb. 7, 5:30 p.m. | South Campus | $75
Right in line with the upcoming winter Olympics in South Korea, Chef Robert Hall will share his experiences serving food at the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, as well as cook delicious and simple Korean dishes for participants to take home. And it just happens to be perfect menu inspo for your Olympics watch party.
Champagne and All That Sparkles
Feb. 13, 6 p.m. | South Campus | $75
Learn the ins and outs of this bubbly drink from wine educator Lorri Hambuchen. Participants are invited to learn how sparkling wine is made, the styles of sparkling wine and general pairing ideas. Just remember to save this info for next New Year’s Eve.
Romantic Edibles
Feb. 14, 5:30 | South Campus | $75 (per person, not per couple)
Say goodbye to boring Valentine’s plans. Chef Robert Hall will walk couples through making a variety of dishes all meant to be eaten with hands, not forks. At the end of class, participants will take home recipes and all the delicious creations.
The Art of Pie: Baked and Cream Pies
Feb. 15, 5:30 | South Campus | $65
Ever wanted to be that person who brings the beautiful pies to Thanksgiving dinner? Here’s your chance. Chef Chocla Lea will teach participants the ins and outs of making the best baked and cream pies, as well as the beautiful latticework details. Participants will leave the class with their own fresh pies, baking secrets, pie recipes and fun memories.
Advanced Wine Tasting: Discover Your Wine Style
Feb. 20, 6 p.m. | South Campus | $65
This class is meant to be the next step after mastering Wine 101. Wine educator Lorri Hambuchen will lead this exploration into finding participant’s own wine style and teaching them how to navigate the overwhelming options at wine shops.
Cupcakes & Icings
Feb. 22, 5:30 p.m. | South Campus | $65
Participants will learn the basic mixing methods for making cupcakes from scratch. Led by chef Randy, bakers will make their choice of chocolate, vanilla or carrot cupcakes. Each participant will take home recipes and a dozen cupcakes baked in class.
Cinnamon Rolls
March 8, 5:30 p.m. | South Campus | $65
This popular class will make you the family favorite. Chef Chocla Lea teaches beginners the steps to make their own homemade cinnamon rolls. Participants will take home six big cinnamon rolls of their own creation, recipes and the knowledge to create their own sweet treats at home.
French Croissant Workshop
March 29, 5:30 p.m. | South Campus | $75
Chef Wendy Schay will teach participants how to create these buttery French favorites. The class will cover each step of the process, instructing participants on how to create their own dozen croissants to take home with them.
Pâte à Choux Pastries: Cream Puffs & Éclairs
March 29, 5:30 p.m. | South Campus | $65
This high-class dessert is a French delicacy, and it can be a bit daunting to create. Chef Randy will lead beginners through creating their own pastry masterpieces for them to take home to impress their friends and family.
