Soirée’s 2010 Women To Watch: Laura Bullock

Laura Bullock
TITLE : Owner
COMPANY : Laura Bullock Interiors

Desiring to immerse myself into interior design, I studied it at the college level to learn all aspects and skills. Creating an atmosphere for clients goes beyond aesthetics and into elements of business, communication and problem solving. A recent affiliation with Chuck Hamilton Construction has allowed me to integrate my design concepts with CHC’s unmatched ability to enliven an otherwise subdued space.

Why I Love This
Complacency will never exist because each day presents a new challenge. It’s important for me to follow my design philosophy and not fear making a bold statement. The saying goes that you get out of it what you put into it; I’m much fulfilled.

Career Goal
Remaining eager, expanding my client base and building a firm where I can provide students experience through internships.

Best business advice you ever received and who gave it: My grandfather taught me life’s most valuable lessons: hard work, integrity and morals. There is no such thing as business ethics, just ethics. Who consistently inspires you? For a client who prefers classic design, I look to Barbara Barry. For risk takers, I can’t get enough of Kelly Wearstler’s edgy style. What business men and women do you admire most? Sarah Wilson exemplifies the modern woman as a successful business owner, while carrying herself with class and graciousness as a wife and mother. She’s not only my sister, but also my dear friend and role model.

Favorite Workplace Expression: “ I’m so obsessed.”

Favorite Quote: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.” – Sir Winston Churchill

Wardrobe
I love neutrals, especially cream and gold. It’s the palette of my bedroom and proof of my fondness for this combination, which I find to be sophisticated and timeless. Oftentimes I will add a punch of color or pattern with a scarf to an ensemble, just as I would in a room with pillows, art and accessories. I view my wardrobe the same way I do a new space: spend the money on your staple pieces and spend less on accessories and interchangeable items you may grow tired of more quickly. My personal style has many personalities, and, if anything, I want that to be a reflection of my versatility in design.

How will you know when you are successful? Success for me equates to having a satisfied client, one who truly loves the space I’ve created for them. Witnessing the love-at-first-sight reaction they have to a newly designed room is the moment all the stress and late nights at the office are 100-percent justified.
