Dr. Kaitlin Cockerell, a pediatrician at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, gives more information on flu shots and flu season. Call 501.602.6831 to schedule your child’s flu shot appointment today or visit archildrens.org/flu.
Why is it important to get a flu shot?
KC: The flu is a contagious respiratory virus that can cause serious illness and sometimes even death in children. While it is still possible to get the flu despite being vaccinated, the vaccine is very effective at preventing the life-threatening complications of flu.
Why didn’t we see as many flu cases last year?
KC: There were very few flu cases last year due to masking and distancing guidelines in place during that time. Now that masks are no longer mandated and with the return of in-person activities, it is important your child receives the flu vaccine for protection from influenza.
What are the predictions for this flu season?
KC: During every flu season, Arkansas Children’s has many children who have to stay in the hospital to recover. With fewer people masking and lower immunity to flu, we are predicting the flu season will be even more severe this season.
Who should get the flu shot?
KC: Almost everyone ages 6 months and older should get the flu shot. Flu shots are also recommended for pregnant women. If you have questions about whether or not you or your child should get the flu shot, talk to your pediatrician or health care provider.
