Silvek’s Bakery May Soon Close

You may need to say goodbye to your Polish baked goods in a few months — Silvek’s European Bakery in the Heights Kroger might be closing.

We’ll pause for reaction.

After 30 years, owner and baker Silvek Pupkowski is ready to retire and says his contract with Kroger is expiring in March.

Although he is ready for a break (getting up at 1 a.m. everyday to bake can be tiring), he is willing to sell the business.

“The main thing is that I want to retire, but if possible we’d like to sell,” Pupkowski said. “Right now we don’t have any ideas of who we would sell to, but we are open to selling to someone who has knowledge about European style, or I can make a deal to teach somebody.”

If someone were to buy the shop, it would have to open in a new location outside of Kroger, where it has been located for the last 20 years. However, Pupkowski says that he doesn’t have any leads on buyers yet.

The bakery specializes in European goods that are not available at other American shops. He said the breads are crusty and simple, and the pastries “you can’t find anywhere else.”

Pupkowski says the first thing he’d like to do after retirement is take a trip to Poland with his entire family — wife and three children.
