Attorneys aren’t always thought of as the most creative types, but Little Rock appellate attorney Tasha Taylor maintains that there is an art to handling appeals. “Writing an effective brief is a careful balance of persuasion, creativity and attention to detail. It really is an art form,” she says. Tasha enjoys the challenge of appellate work and has built a practice around it at her firm, Taylor & Taylor Law Firm, P.A.

According to Tasha, the technical aspects of an appeal can be daunting to the unfamiliar, particularly in a procedurally rigorous jurisdiction like Arkansas. “You have to have a working knowledge of four different sets of procedural rules,” she says, “not to mention a familiarity with the body of substantive law at the heart of the appeal.”

Fortunately, Tasha is a quick study and is no stranger to working under tight deadlines. After graduating from law school in 2005, Tasha spent two years as a judicial law clerk for Justice Robert L. Brown at the Arkansas Supreme Court. She credits the Justice’s influence for helping to shape her career path. “Justice Brown is a brilliant jurist, and I was truly fortunate to have had him as my mentor,” Tasha says. While at the Supreme Court, Tasha worked on over 100 appeals, often having only one week to review the parties’ briefs and advise Justice Brown on the main issues in the case.

Tasha has been involved in approximately 50 appellate matters since entering private practice following her time at the Arkansas Supreme Court. After founding Taylor & Taylor Law Firm, P.A. in 2010, Tasha and her law partner (and husband) Andy Taylor have focused their appellate practice on complex civil appeals, including contract and business disputes and domestic relations matters, as well as cases involving issues of statutory and constitutional interpretation. Together, Tasha and Andy have presented Continuing Legal Education courses to attorneys on a number of appellate topics, and they created and co-author their blog, ArkansasAppeals.com, to keep up with developments in Arkansas appellate practice. “We enjoy blogging because it helps us connect with other attorneys,” says Tasha, “and many of our appellate clients were referred to us by their trial counsel.”

When not writing a brief or updating ArkansasAppeals.com, Tasha enjoys spending time outside with Andy and their daughter, Norah, visiting local restaurants and farmers markets, and practicing her photography skills.
