Dr. Natalia Hodge of Hodge Orthodontics breaks down the basics for your family.

Why is early orthodontic intervention important for kids?

NH: Addressing problems while kids are developing allows orthodontists to guide jaw growth and tooth positioning. This can significantly reduce the need for extensive treatments later in life. Early intervention can enhance a child’s self-esteem by providing them with an improved smile during their formative years. We recommend every child have their first orthodontic consultation at age seven. Most kids will not need any treatment then.

How does technology make orthodontics easier for kids?

NH: Technology is revolutionizing the field of orthodontics, making treatment much more manageable and comfortable. We now have the ability to 3D print expanders and aligners. 3D printed expanders fit more precisely, are less bulky and don’t require tooth separators, which can be uncomfortable. Similarly, aligners have become increasingly popular because they gently guide teeth into their correct positions without the need for traditional braces. Overall, these changes have made the experience more convenient and appealing for kids.
