HOW I KNEW THIS WAS MY PASSION
After college, I worked at a juvenile detention center as a paraeducator. I was so inspired by the students who not only just survived many struggles, but also continued to fight for their essential human dignity during these difficult times.
MY FIRST JOB AND WHAT IT TAUGHT ME
My first job was washing dishes at a nursing home. It taught me hard work and the importance of contributing to the well-being of others no matter what role I had within an organization.
NONPROFIT I WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT
Lessons for Life, led by Ms. Alexis Ware. Lessons for Life is a mentoring program for middle school female students to support academic and social development. Ms. Ware’s passion and her amazing volunteers provide the needed support for our students.
BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN MY CAREER
I look forward to engaging with others to unpack opportunities to let people shine at what they do. Too often leaders focus on constraining individuals in an attempt to solve problems when, in reality, they should be inspiring people to do the impossible!
A SKILL I NEVER EXPECTED TO USE IN THIS FIELD
When I was in college my parents and friends doubted the utility of my double major: political science and psychology (I agreed too). Today, I apply the skills I learned from those majors every day to support professionals and students.
ONE PRACTICE I USE TO MAINTAIN MY MENTAL HEALTH
I am blessed to have a soul mate. She provides me with balance and a love for life that I never dreamed possible. Coupled with a healthy need to exercise faith, I know that I am living my best life.
BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED
Never let the noise make you lose focus on what is important.
ONE THING I WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT MY COMPANY
PCSSD is a great place for learning -- not just about schooling, but how to live and cherish diversity in its many forms as a citizen, neighbor and family member.
WHAT KEEPS ME MOTIVATED
My colleagues, students, family, and most importantly, my wife. Each and every day I am inspired by those I know, those that challenge my thinking and those that I love.
THE FIRST THING I DO TO COURSE CORRECT WHEN I HIT A WALL
I walk away from a problem I am struggling to complete to work on another task I know I can complete effectively. Later with a clearer mind, I return to the problem looking for new solutions.
WHAT KEEPS ME COMING BACK TO MY JOB EVERY DAY
I truly, deeply enjoy my work! Engaging with professionals, students, families, and community stakeholders to do what is right is a blessing. Doing what is right keeps us in the struggle for a future democracy for all citizens.
BEST CAREER MOMENT SO FAR
As principal of Carl Sandburg School, where even though students who lived in poverty rose from 40% to 60% over seven years, our school community increased the number of students who met the state standards from 44% to 84.7%.
