AR Kids Read recently announced a brand-new event called Spellebration. The event, held Thursday, May 3, will be a local celebrity spelling bee and all proceeds with benefit AR Kids Read's one-on-one tutoring program for central Arkansas k-12 students.

Founded in 2012, AR Kids Read’s volunteer-based literacy intervention is designed to provide struggling readers with trained tutors who donate one hour each week during the school year. The mission is to improve the future of Arkansas children and families by advancing literacy education so children can read proficiently by the end of third grade.

"We’re buzzing with excitement about our brand-new event," executive director Charlie Conklin. "With the community’s generous support, we’re continuing to make great strides in building stronger readers and helping all children succeed."

The Spellebration will take place from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Albert Pike Memorial Temple. Matt DeCample will emcee while local celebs Lisa Fischer of B 98.5, David Lippman of THV-11, Celia Storey of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Tyler Thomason of KARK-4, Idris Turner of Power 92.3 and Ansley Watson of KATV-7 and their teams go head-to-head. Guests will enjoy a casual cocktail reception and silent auction before the competition officially begins.

Individual tickets can be purchased here. All proceeds will provide supplies, books, training, ongoing education and support for students and tutors.
