ACANSA is teaming up with The Yarn Storytelling to bring a new arts venture to Little Rock. The Ten-Minute Play Showcase will be the first of its kind in central Arkansas, inspired by the executive producer of The Yarn Storytelling, Hilary Trudell.
Trudell founded The Yarn Storytelling to be a local storytelling organization whose mission is to break down barriers and change hearts and minds through the power of story. The Yarn's productions are theme-based, centering on social issues that are prevalent in society.
"Launching this showcase has been a dream of mine since I moved back to Little Rock," Trudell said in a press release. "It’s such a fantastic way to highlight many artists and, in some cases, give those artists the recognition and support they need to take their work to the next level. I have produced these shows in Charleston, Washington D.C. and Georgia, and I have seen how it brings the community together and the confidence it gives artists. It’s truly magical."
A panel of artists has already chosen five plays submitted by local Arkansans. Now, prominent local directors — Katherine Silverman, Rafael Castenera, Ann Muse and Juain Young — have chosen their cast of local actors and are working on bringing the scripts to life. The five plays will debut on March 1 at Pulaski Technical College.
"By investing in our local talent and providing more opportunities for people to come together around artistic experiences, we know that initiatives like The Ten-Minute Play Showcase will make Little Rock an even more dynamic and compelling place to call home," said executive director of ACANSA Dillon Hupp in a press release.
ACANSA, best known for the annual ACANSA Arts Festival, has recently focused on fostering creative collaborations between existing arts entities in central Arkansas. Hupp and John Gaudin are now at the helm of ACANSA and have since started new programs such as The Ten-Minute Play Showcase, Potluck and Poison Ivy and also partnered with the Oxford American to launch the Jeff Baskin Writers Fellowship.
