From summer camp to black-tie events, here’s this month’s snapshot of the news worth noting in Little Rock nonprofits.
THE DREAM TEAM
Campfires, canoes, bug spray — on the outside it looks like just another day in the life of a kid enjoying their summer break.
But Camp Hope isn’t your average summer camp.
Hosted by Women and Children First at Camp Aldersgate, Camp Hope is a summer experience for children who have been exposed to domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Starting in San Diego in 2003, Camp Hope has since spread across the nation to 15 locations, with this event being the first in Arkansas.
According to WCF, kids exposed to domestic violence are at a higher risk for emotional, social and behavioral issues, and are at a significantly higher risk for future abuse. Camp Hope is designed to help children develop positive coping mechanisms to help them thrive in difficult environments.
And while the premise isn’t all rainbows and butterflies, the purpose is to provide these kids with a fun summer camp experience full of swimming, campfire singing and games. In short, it’s a chance to be “normal.”
The kids also benefit from mentoring programs while at Camp Hope, the product of hours of training by WCF’s already highly-trained staff, along with an “evidence- and value-based curriculum that teaches campers to believe in themselves, in others and in their dreams.”
Pass the marshmallows.
