Starting Wednesday, Jan. 22 and opening Friday, Jan. 24, the Tony-Award winning production “Clybourne Park” will take center stage at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, 601 Main St., Little Rock.
Written by Bruce Norris and directed by Rep founder Cliff Baker, “Clybourne Park” tells the story of a a white couple who sells their home to a black family (the fictional Younger family from “A Raisin in the Sun”), causing an uproar in their middle-class neighborhood. Fifty years later in 2009, the same house is changing hands again, but the stakes have changed.
There are a few special programs going on this month for the production, which will be running from Jan. 22-Feb. 9:
- Between Stage and Screen, Laman Library, 2801 Orange St., North Little Rock: In association with The Rep’s latest production, Dramaturg Werner Trieschmann will discuss themes from Bruce Norris’ Tony Award-winning play “Clybourne Park” and Lorraine Hansberry’s Tony Award-winning musical “A Raisin in the Sun.” The movie “A Raisin in the Sun” will be shown. The screening starts at 6 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 16). This event is free to the public.
- Pay What You Can Night, The Rep, 601 Main St., Little Rock: Take advantage of The Rep’s “Pay What You Can Night” on Wednesday (Jan. 22). Patrons can pay any amount they wish for their ticket. Tickets must be purchased in person at the Box Office at 601 Main Street the day of the performance. The Box Office will be open from 9 a.m. until the curtain time. Tickets are limited to (2) two per person. The show starts at 7 p.m. The offer is based on seating availability.
- Preshow Director Talks, The Rep: A preshow talk will take place on the set with The Rep founder and show director Cliff Fannin Baker, as well as members of the creative team before both shows 6:15 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday (Jan. 22-23).
- Distinguished Lecture Series, Clinton School of Public Service, 1200 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock: From noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 23), The Rep Producing Artistic Director Bob Hupp will host the cast from the play for a panel discussion on the production. Admission is free. Call the Clinton School at (501) 683-5239 for reservations.
- Opening Night, The Rep: Opening night for “Clybourne Park” on Friday (Jan. 23) will include a post-show reception with the cast immediately following the show. Complimentary champagne and light hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The show starts at 8 p.m.
- It’s in the Bag Lunch n’ Learn Series, Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, 501 W. Ninth St., Little Rock: From 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, stop by the museum on your lunch hour for its new quarterly series created as a part of MTCC’s fifth anniversary celebration in September 2013. It will offer a chance to learn more about the themes of “Clybourne Park.” The center provides soda and water, and attendees bring their own lunch. “It’s in the Bag” Lunch ‘n Learn Series is free and open to the public.
Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evening performances are at 7 p.m., while Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 8 p.m. Sunday Matinees performances are at 2 p.m.
