After a burst pipe caused by the February snowstorm forced the Museum of Discovery to close for extensive repairs, it finally has plans to reopen the museum at the end of August.
While there is no official grand opening date yet, museum represenatives are eager to announce a date soon.
The flooding caused about $7 million of damage to the museum, destroying 70% of its interactive exhibits. They anticipate it will take about two years to create all the new exhibits to replace the damaged ones, meaning the museum will reach its full potential by 2023.
When doors reopen in August, the museum will unveil an expanded Tinkering Studio as well as an expanded animal care studio that will be viewable to guests for the first time. They also anticipate the installation of a few permanent, high-engagement features in the science center before the new exhibits arrive.
Current MoD members will have the option to extend their expiration date up to six months (the number of months since the MoD closed its doors) or to re-up membership at the original expiration date. Any new memberships purchased between now and the reopening will not expire until Aug. 31, 2022.
If you can’t wait to explore, the MoD has partnered with the Mid-America Science Museum in Hot Springs to offer free entry to each museum’s members when they visit the other one.
