COVID-19 may be shaking up the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center‘s yearly Juneteenth block party plans, but you can still be part of celebrations from home.
Originating in Texas, this holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. With a focus on education, freedom and forward thinking, the day has changed a bit since the original African American Emancipation Day was first celebrated in 1865, but the heart and message remains the same.
To celebrate the holiday, the MTCC will host a virtual Juneteenth celebration on Facebook from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, June 20.
“For the African American community, the struggle for justice and equity remains persistent, but so does pride in our history and heritage,” said Christina Shutt, the museum’s director. “As communities and businesses around the world begin to stand together in solidarity against racism, we invite everyone to join us in a celebration of culture and freedom.”

Digital attendees can expect a streaming lineup including Grammy-winning gospel group the Clark Sisters, Rodney Block, Bijoux and nearly 40 other performers. And because what’s 2020 without TikTok, the MTCC is challenging families to submit a video with their best “Savage” TikTok dance (you know the one) to info@mosaictemplars.com for a chance to see the video aired on Juneteenth.
