New Movement in the Parks Series Brings Ballet Outside

Ballet Arkansas and Little Rock Parks & Recreation recently announced a new series titled Movement in the Parks, which will feature free live dance performances for the public at MacArthur Park, War Memorial Park, the First Security Amphitheatre at Riverfront Park and at Southwest Community Center.

Performances will feature classical pieces and previews of Ballet Arkansas’ annual productions starting this September and running into spring 2022.

“Movement in the Parks ensures all within our community have access to world class dance performances in stunning outdoor settings, free of charge,” said Michael Fothergill, Ballet Arkansas’ executive and artistic director. “Bringing diverse populations together to celebrate the arts and Little Rock’s abundant natural resources is a pillar of our partnership, but we also hope to create opportunities for residents to explore Ballet Arkansas’ eclectic programming in settings that enhance their appreciation of the capital city.”

As part of the series, Ballet Arkansas will also present a lineup of lectures for K-12 students throughout the year.

Movement in the Parks programming for young audiences is designed to accommodate the schedules of educators and the need to keep students safe while interacting with the performing arts,” said Fothergill. “Most importantly, it fosters a love for the arts while immersing students in natural environments. In a most unusual time, we owe it to the students to find ways to meet the programming challenges of the pandemic.”

Here’s a look at the performance schedule:

  • Sept. 25, noon and 3 p.m. at MacArthur Park
  • Oct. 16, noon and 3 p.m at Southwest Community Center
  • March 12, 2 and 6 p.m. at Riverfront Park
  • April 2, 2 and 6 p.m. at War Memorial Park

Attendees are invited to bring their own lawn chairs. And because Riverfront Park is located in the River Market Entertainment District, attendees are allowed to bring alcoholic beverages to the March 12 performance.
