BEST CAREER MOMENT SO FAR
Leaving a successful industry career for academia was tough mentally, emotionally and financially. However, a mid-career shift has allowed me to use my industry experience and grow in ways that help me better serve others.
MY FIRST JOB AND WHAT IT TAUGHT ME
I began my career as a programmer. While many view programming as minutiae-focused, it gave me the ability to tackle intricate details while maintaining a vision for broader outcomes, which helps in almost any work challenge.
WHAT KEEPS ME COMING BACK TO MY JOB EVERY DAY
I’m driven by frontiers in innovation, research and broadening my students’ understanding of the world. This quest keeps me both open and focused.
WHAT KEEPS ME MOTIVATED
My faith and family drive me to serve others instead of working for my personal benefit. They provide me with constant course correction in my priorities.
I think struggling for a solution helps us to expand our options and better understand the problem. Then once we step back, we can usually more clearly see the solution.
