Men on a Mission 2021: William Cunningham

MY FIRST JOB AND WHAT IT TAUGHT ME
My first job was picking peaches. It taught me hard work and teamwork. I also learned a lot working amongst a diverse group of people of different ages, cultures and abilities. And I learned how to pick the best Arkansas peaches.

NONPROFIT I WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT
City Year. My wife was a volunteer with them when we first started dating and it really opened my eyes to the issues they were addressing. I really believe in their mission and I volunteered with several projects.

A SKILL I NEVER EXPECTED TO USE IN THIS FIELD
The people management part that encapsulates all the processes of acquisition, optimization and retention of talent in the organization. Developing people, not projects, is more important than I realized as an engineer entering this industry decades ago.

ONE PRACTICE I USE TO MAINTAIN MY MENTAL HEALTH
Spending time outdoors: walking, fishing and playing with my boys outside. I think that getting back out in nature really helps me personally to mentally reset when needed.

BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED
Start funding your retirement account before you get your first paycheck, and you will never notice the difference in the pay. And, work hard because no one is irreplaceable.
