Mardi Gras Comes to South Main on Saturday

The vibe for South Main on Saturday is laissez les bons temps rouler — big time.

SoMa is once again celebrating Mardi Gras — or SoMardi Gras with a full day of events and activities marking the Cajun holiday, and it all kicks off with the annual SoMardi Gras Parade. At noon, the parade will start at 24th Street, making its way down Main Street with floats and walkers in tow to the finish line at 12th Street.

This year’s theme is “Pirates and Popstars,” a mix of glitz, glam and the high seas. If we had to guess, you can probably expect big hair, sequins and more than a few Johnny Depp impressions.

After the parade, stick around for the ninth annual Beard and Mustache Contest at the Bernice Gardens. Contestants will be judged on categories like best mustache, most original beard and dest DIY crafted beard for all the hairless wonders out there.

While you’re there, we suggest hitting up all the food trucks coming to the garden, plus live music from Gerard Delafose and the Zydeco Gators. And keep an eye out for SoMa businesses getting in on the fun, like hurricanes at Rock Town Distillery and an after party at South on Main.

If you want to make the day all about Fido (and who wouldn’t?), head over to Bark Bar’s annual Mardi Paw celebration after the parade for drink specials, a selfie station and all the fun your furry friend can handle.

To get details on all of these events, visit the SoMa website and follow the neighborhood on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with all things SoMa.
