How to Have Fun as a Family When It’s Cold Outside

Everyone loves a good snow day, but when the novelty wears off, you’re tasked with entertaining yourself and your crew despite the wintery world outside. Luckily, our sister publication, Little Rock Family (aka the go-to source on activities for the whole family), rounded up a list of things to do when it’s cold in central Arkansas.

Embrace the cold. We’re serious—go outside! If you dress appropriately (and it isn’t 10 degrees), you won’t freeze. You’ll see the beauty of Arkansas when it’s stripped down for winter weather. Head to the Jolly Roger’s Marina in Pinnacle Mountain State Park for an Eagle Lake Cruise this month. Every weekend in January, visitors will try to spot wintering bald eagles and other migratory waterfowl on Lake Maumelle.

Visit the library. Pick out a new book to read individually or as a family. Then, stick around for one of the many free activities at your local library: movie screenings, games, snack times, crafts, tea parties, storytimes, concerts, knitting classes, gardening and more. Explore art. Visit the Arkansas Arts Center to revel in the newly-opened exhibit “Nathalia Edenmont: Force of Nature”; the artist photographs women and girls in elaborate dresses made of natural materials, like flowers, fruit or vegetables. After getting inspired, visit a painting studio to let the kids get creative: Glaze and fire pottery pieces at The Painted Pig or make a painting at a Spirited Art class.

Meet up at the museum. Schedule a play date with family or friends at a local museum. Through March 27, the Museum of Discovery will present the exhibit “How People Make Things” which shows kids how familiar objects are manufactured. The museum also presents the Wiggle Worms workshops for youngsters each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Jump around. When boredom really sets in, your kids (and you) will be bouncing off the walls. Take them to hop and soar at one of central Arkansas’ bounce businesses instead. Newest to the Little Rock area is Altitude Trampoline Park, an indoor expanse of more than 125 inter-connected trampolines.Test your jumping skills on any number of obstacles, shoot hoops on basketball lanes, or even launch yourself into a giant 60-foot foam pit. Or, visit Jump!Zone in North Little Rock to pounce and slide on massive inflatables in the shapes of a sinking ship, carousel and more.
