Rising gas prices are forcing central Arkansans to cancel road trip plans and opt for staycations closer to home, but it doesn’t have to be all gloom and doom and summertime sadness. Ditching the keys to avoid breaking the bank at the gas pump is easier than you’d think, and more beneficial for all of us, too.
Each summer, the Ozone Action Days program returns to remind us to think twice about hopping in the car. Here are a few changes you can make and how they can impact the community, your health and your wallet.
Pump Up Your Tires
Fortunately, central Arkansas is filled with beautiful, convenient bike trails and pedestrian bridges that connect neighborhoods to various attractions. Take a walk or ride your bike on one of the nearly 100 trails accessible around the capital city. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing stroll or an action-packed mountain biking adventure, there’s something for everyone. Check out some of the best stops on the Arkansas River Trail here.
Try Transit
Too hot to pound the pavement? We’ve got good news: Rock Region METRO offers 15 routes throughout Pulaski County, all accessible through a convenient, free app. Save a few extra dollars by taking advantage of the affordable buses or trolleys, especially if you’re hopping between Argenta and the River Market.
Breathe Easier
Protect air quality and say goodbye to dangerous pollutants and hello to cleaner air. Opting for transportation methods other than your car can help not only your bank account, but also your breathing. By walking or biking, you can reap the benefits of exercise and help reduce harmful ground-level ozone, which can cause throat irritation, chest pain, congestion and other long-term negative health impacts.
Help Your ‘Hood
Spend all the money you saved on gas by supporting your neighborhood restaurants, boutiques or snow cone stands. Because spending money at small businesses feels way better than pouring it out at the pump any day.
This summer, save some cash and the environment by ditching the keys. Learn more about Ozone Action Days’ efforts to protect air quality across central Arkansas here.
