‘Gridiron’ Returns to The Rep Stage

Update: Due to an outbreak of COVID-19 cases among the cast, this year’s production of “Gridiron” has been canceled.

Gird your loins, Little Rock. “Gridiron” is back.

The biennial show returns to the Arkansas Repertory Theatre Aug. 9-13 after canceling in 2020, and it’s got four years of spoofing, joking and roasting to make up for.

This 106-year-old tradition began as a vaudeville-style show put on for lawyers by lawyers. Today, “Gridiron” still stars mostly legal professionals, but is now open for audiences to watch them poke fun (and take a few swings) at local and national figures and current events via satirical musical. From politicians to media members, no one is safe.

Though not an official production of The Rep — Gridiron Productions Inc. is its own 501(c)(3) with a partnership with the Pulaski County Bar Association — the independently-produced show has taken the Sixth Street stage for more than 25 years, and even donated its 2018 proceeds to The Rep’s Next Act campaign.

Audiences have five chances to catch the show. Opening night is Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 8 p.m., complete with drinks and hors d’oeuvres. On Wednesday and Thursday, showtime is 7 p.m., and Friday and Saturday are at 8 p.m.

For more information and to purchase tickets, visit The Rep’s website or call 501.378.0405. And we suggest doing so soon, because this show typically sells out.
