Sun and Age Spots
by Kimberly Jenkins, L.A., Skin Care Specialist

“Sun and age spots, also known as hyperpigmentation or uneven pigmentation, affects most people regardless of ethnic background or skin color.”

It may appear as blotchy, uneven areas, or as patches of brown to gray discoloration or freckling. Hyperpigmentation occurs when the body produces excess melanin in response to UV exposure, hormonal fluctuations, or as a result of trauma to the skin such as acne.

For prevention of these spots, it is essential to apply a sunscreen of at least spf 20 every morning, and a higher spf for prolonged outdoor activities.

I recommend two procedures for removing discoloration. The first and most highly recommended is the Intense Pulse Light treatments. IPL treatments produce almost immediate results with little to no patient down time. The procedure generally takes 30 minutes to perform, depending on the area, and results are seen in as little as one treatment. The second option is the Pigment Peel, a professional-only treatment targeting hyperpigmentation. The Pigment Peel dramatically improves the uneven appearance of photo-damaged skin. Four to six treatments are often required for the best results.

Regardless of the treatment you choose, you must continue to use a quality sun screen daily and skin-brightening product to maintain your results while preventing future damage.
